Editorial

“As we enter the second quarter of this 21st century, aging in good health is no longer a utopia. Today, the scientific community is gradually deciphering the keys to aging and offering therapeutic perspectives that will very likely soon help us age healthily. Technological and digital tools are capable of contributing to healthy aging by enabling better medical monitoring, breaking isolation, or improving mobility. Preventive actions are already effectively combating aging, as we know that staying physically active, eating healthily, not smoking, or maintaining a rich social life contributes to aging well. All these strategies resonate with the demands of the aging population, and even younger generations, who not only want to stay healthy but also continue to enjoy their families, travel, pursue leisure activities, and age at home. We are in the Decade of Healthy Ageing (2021-2030), launched by the World Health Organization.

The objective of this global initiative? ‘To bring together governments, civil society, international agencies, professionals, academia, the media, and the private sector’ to conduct concerted action over a 10-year period to improve the lives of older people, their families, and the communities in which they live. Because enabling healthy aging is a collective action. And it depends partly on us: physicians, caregivers, researchers, and social sector stakeholders.

Once again this year, this congress will be an opportunity to disseminate and share knowledge, innovations, and practical tools in the field of dependency prevention, frailty, and healthy aging. Embracing these tools and implementing them in our practice will enable us to offer our patients and the population the possibility of aging in good health and changing the future of our society. We are but one link in this collective action for ‘healthy aging,’ but our role is essential. Let us all work together in this direction. Excellent congress. Dr. Sandrine Sourdet, IHU HealthAge, Toulouse (France).”
